What you need to know about formaldehyde and formaldehyde deposits in rhenus cooling lubricants

The Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) classified formaldehyde1 as both „Carcinogen 1B“ and „Mutagen Category 2“. However, for manufacturers, users and distributors of coolants, the directive on formaldehyde classification does not entail any change in labelling or measurement obligations.

What about formaldehyde depots?

Some products in the Rhenus Lub range contain formaldehyde reservoirs from which formaldehyde may be released. However, labelling is only mandatory once the concentration of formaldehyde in its released form reaches 1000ppm (=0.1 %). With Rhenus Lub cooling lubricants, you can be certain that this limit has never been exceeded and never will be in future.

Although we are not obliged to do so, testing the formaldehyde concentration for Rhenus Lub has long been part of our standard testing procedures. In the laboratory, our experts use a Scalar system to determine the maximum possible amount of formaldehyde that can be released from the formaldehyde reservoir. This measurement method demonstrates that rhenus cooling lubricants containing a formaldehyde reservoir can be used safely and without risk.

The directive on the classification of formaldehyde has the following implications for Rhenus Lub cooling lubricants:

  • Do not require any modified handling procedures
  • Are not subject to any labelling requirements with respect to formaldehyde and formaldehyde depots
  • Are totally safe to use after standard laboratory tests
  • Offer a continued choice between products with or without formaldehyde depots
